The Atlanta Braves are a resurgent time in the National League Eastern division with rising stars like Ronald Acuna Jr., and it appears Major League Baseball has taken notice and awarded the franchise and the City of Atlanta the 2021 All- Star Game. This will be the first All-Star Game held in SunTrust Park, which opened in 2017 after the closure of the Braves long time home Turner Field.

The Major League Baseball All-Star Game is more than a one-night affair. The stadium will also be home to the Celebrity Softball Game, the Home Run Derby, and the All-Star game itself, along with all of baseball’s activities. Atlanta will have a busy couple of sports years as they are scheduled to host the March Madness tournament in the coming years as well.

When discussing the decision made by Major League Baseball Commssioner Rob Manfred, the Braves Chairman Terry McGuirk said in a statement, “When we built SunTrust Park and The Battery Atlanta we envisioned our complex would be the perfect setting for an All-Star Game and we are thrilled to be able to showcase the ballpark, Cobb County and the City of Atlanta to the world.”

Of his decision Commissioner Manfred stated, “There was great commitment of all of the involved governmental entities. Secondly, there’s no place in Major League Baseball where there’s more buzz around a great young team than there is here in Atlanta. Last, and maybe most important for us, the facility here, including SunTrust Park and the Atlanta Battery, is the best in baseball. Hats off to chairman Terry McGuirk for the development here.”

Manfred made the decision while being flanked by some of the Atlanta Braves most visible legends. Legends like “Hammerin’” Hank Aaron, baseball’s one-time home run King. Chipper Jones, a mainstay of the team’s roster across two decades and a recent inductee into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Tom Glavine and John Smoltz, two of the three pitchers who led the Braves to several division championships and multiple World Series appearances. Both men have since been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. As has the last man on stage the legendary Phil Niekro.

Going into the announcement the Braves had a firm hold on second place in the National League East Division standings just three games behind the rival Philadelphia Phillies for first place. In 2018, 184 million All-Star ballots were cast, and the leading vote getter in the National League was the Braves Freddie Freeman.

The first All-Star Game to be held in Atlanta was in 1972, when the game was played in then, Atlanta Stadium. The most recent All-Star Game was in 2000 at Turner Field. The game will decide which league takes the series lead in Atlanta as the National League won the 1972 game 4-3 and the American League won the game in 2000, despite the National League being managed by the Braves own Bobby Cox and the most memorable event being a Chipper Jones home run, by a score of 6-3.
