We’ve all heard the phrase: “There’s a new sheriff in town.” Well, in this case, it’s a TV host. NBC’s top hit, America’s Got Talent, hired Tyra Banks on May 30, 2017. The fabulous, famous, fashionista is shaking things up on Simon’s reality TV show. Tyra is most known for her positions as judge, host, and creator of the immensely popular America’s Next Top Model. Fans need not worry. She renewed her contract for the next season and is now a part of both programs
Banks’ brings her celebrity status, fashion sense, and experience in the entertainment industry with her.
Her presence revitalizes America’s Got Talent. She’s a crisp, refreshing breath of air. She’s a fun, charismatic, ball of energy. As one contestant put it, “She’s got some personality!” Paul Telegdy, president of alternative and reality group at NBC Entertainment stated, “Tyra is the complete package: Out-of-this-world talented, funny, brilliant and all heart. In whatever she has done, she has always connected with audiences around the world. Her vivacious spirit will infuse AGT in a big way” (The Hollywood Reporter).
What are the people saying? My dad is an avid viewer of the show, and he thinks Tyra is an exceptional judge. Derek Stauffer, writing for Buddy TV, describes her as a straightforward judge, whereas Nick Cannon was funnier and more lighthearted. He thinks Nick was a better host. He says Tyra shows very little personality on the show and states that “while it felt like Nick was really connecting with contestants, Tyra feels like she is going through the motions”.
I disagree. Tyra puts in a lot of effort into calming contestants’ nerves, celebrating their victories, and softening the blows of their defeats.
When there’s a subpar performance, she keeps things light and avoids awkward moments with a sense of humor that often made me smile or laugh. Viewers surely remember The Kazoo Queens. The ladies emitted dissonant, shrill noises that made the audience wince and the judges immediately buzz. Tyra bounded on stage, grabbed a kazoo and a set of golden plates, and joined in on the group’s performance.
Tyra goes out of her way to contribute to the entertainment with her flamboyant reactions to the talent, thoughtful questions in interviews, and overall positive, energetic, and quirky personality.
It’s difficult for long time fans to accept a new host. I mean, Nick was there for six seasons!
But while I agree with the assessment that Tyra is more straightforward and not as funny as Nick, that’s necessarily a bad thing. While some of Nick’s jokes were true blanks, others fell flat. Hosts should also remember that they’re not the main entertainment. Their job is primarily to provide information regarding the show and make viewers and contestants feel welcome. A straightforwardness in hosting can improve flow, promote smoothness, and increase efficiency in a program.
It will likely take a few seasons, but Tyra will win over the critics. For every negative review, there’s a positive one saying the exact opposite thing. But ultimately, it’s up to the fans. So, what do you think? Is Tyra doing a good job? Is she living up to the standards set by Nick? Leave your comments below.
